About
WVFI is the University of Notre Dame's student-run streaming only radio station. While WVFI is currently broadcast via the internet, it hasn't always been that way. WVFI started from the hard work of the students of the Notre Dame Radio Club, transitioning into Notre Dame's first AM radio station as WSND-AM 640.
In 1984, the station changed its call letters to WVFI to avoid confusion in applying for a FM license, becoming The Voice of the Fighting Irish. In 1987, WVFI, needing space figuratively and literally, parted with WSND-FM and moved into LaFortune Student Center. In 2000, WVFI decided to broadcast exclusively online.
Most of the music played on WVFI is independent label "college rock" music, but we also feature programming slots of hip hop, punk rock, hardcore, classic rock, comedy/talk, and sports talk.
As one of Notre Dame's largest student organizations, we help around 150 students broadcast their own formatted shows daily.
WVFI is run by a student leadership board made entirely of students. For information on the current student leaders, see the "About" page. Additionally, all of WVFI's funding comes from the Office of Student Development. Our student media advisor is Pete Farrough.
Additionally, WVFI sponsors on-campus concerts in conjunction with Student Union Board and Legends of Notre Dame, among others. Bands WVFI has brought to Notre Dame include Motel Breakfast, The Unicorns, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Erin McKeown, Pedro the Lion, Hey Mercedes, and Will Oldham.
Famous WVFI staffers include former ND head football coach Charlie Weis ('78), who worked as a Sports Broadcaster, and nationally-acclaimed musician Ted Leo ('94), who was a DJ and a Music Director.
