Match Summaries
Indiana University Mudsharks
After an intense week of practice, Notre Dame took their home field on Saturday to play IU’s Mudshark Rugby Club. The game started with high-energy play from both sides, and after 30 scoreless minutes, IU put away a try and a conversion to make the halftime score 0-7. After the half, Notre Dame came back to score a try, but just miss the conversion. The Mudsharks responded after several minutes with another try but no conversion. Notre Dame, with strong backs play, pulled it out at the end to bring the game to a draw, 12-12.
Chicago Lions
Coming back with new vigor after the previous weekend's loss to Miami of Ohio, NDRFC took on the Chicago Lions B-Side this past saturday. While their set play was solid, the cold and wind made for difficult conditions and allowed Chicago to put in the first try. After a quick score by Notre Dame to even things up, the Lions and the Irish traded tries to make the score 12-12. Unfortunately, the Lions were able to put the match away with a score 3 minutes out, leaving no time for the Irish to answer. Final Score: 24-19
Bowling Green State University
The Saturday afternoon match began with much energy and excitement from both ends of the pitch. Bowling Green took an early lead, keeping the Irish on their heels and scoring several tries in the first twenty minutes of the match. In the twenty minutes before halftime, however, Notre Dame tightened up both their forwards and backs play, and kept the ball in BG territory for much of it, which resulted in a try and conversion shortly before halftime was called. After halftime, the Irish continued with their high work rate and intense forwards play, keeping Bowling Green mostly at bay, and scoring another try for themselves. Despite a powerful showing by Notre Dame, however, Bowling Green’s early lead proved to be too much to make up. Despite a final score of 14-35, Notre Dame took the loss as a positive experience overall, proof positive that they can at least hold their own with some of the best in the Midwest.
Miami of Ohio
After an early morning bus ride, Notre Dame arrived in Oxford, OH ready to play. Taking the field with fervor, the Irish put up the first mark on the scoreboard with a kick-for-points by scrum half Andy O’Connor. After this, the teams traded possession and position evenly, but Miami managed to repeatedly do something Notre Dame could not: put away tries. Notre Dame broke Miami’s 5-meter line more than five times, but did not manage to turn any of these into points. Miami did not have this problem, and ultimately this won them the game. Final score: 28-3
