Why Study Philosophy?
Philosophy seeks to discover the answers to life's most fundamental questions: what, if anything, makes man different from other animals? Do we choose our actions? Is morality objective? No one should go through life without having seriously considered these and similar questions. As Socrates so famously says, "the unexamined life is not worth living" (Apology, 38a).
I am really interested in philosophy, but I don't want to be a philosopher, so I have to major in something else.
This is a very widespread misconception, actually. A degree in philosophy does not condemn you to life behind a desk, writing papers and teaching classes on Descartes' theory of mind or Kant's categorical imperative. Many businesses look to hire graduates in philosophy because they know that philosophy majors are trained to read, think, and write. Philosophy is also a great undergrad major if you intend to go to law school.
