Statement about
poems that appear in NDR.
The two poems I have submitted, I think are representative of forces and anxieties always present in my own work concerning aesthetic vision. "Sonata on Original Sin" came out of the academic tendency to prefer rich language driven poetry and imaginative surprise. "Fence on the Border" is more narrative and about a place which is not necessarily very familiar to the arena of American Contemporary Poetry. The urgency about place is probably the driving force in this poem as well as other poems in my first collection. This urgency, I think, demands accessibility and clarity. The border and its poverty are something I believe universal and necessary in American Poetry.
