Author's Note
by Robert Hahn

The poem in this issue, “Smoke in Marble,” is taken from a new book manuscript,
Mr. Blue’s House of Worship, which I completed last year, partly in Rome, and partly at the Bogliasco Center near Genoa. It is currently in search of a publisher. It was preceded by No Messages, University of Notre Dame, 2001, which won the Sandeen Award, and All Clear, University of South Carolina, 1997. Other poems from the new manuscript have appeared or are forthcoming in The Yale Review, Southwest Review, Ontario Review, and Poetry International.

Several poems in the new manuscript are related to “Smoke in Marble” in their use of a montage technique, in their concern with place, and in their exploration of historical and political themes. Two of these are included here: “Frisian Diversion” and “L’Ora D’Oro/The Golden Hour.”

I am presently at work on translations, from the Italian, of poems by Giorgio Caproni, Eduoardo Sanguineti, and Luciano Erba.

I welcome contact with other poets, and I would be happy to have comments on these poems. I would also be pleased to make contact with others at work on the translation of modern and contemporary Italian poetry. I can be reached at roberthahn38@yahoo.com.
