Dear Friend of Notre Dame Magazine,

Sometimes I get discouraged by the news of the world. I often wonder what a person can do.

The thing is, though, there's not much we do alone. We work in collaboration and community with others. This is especially true of the Notre Dame family. The home base may be here on campus, but the reach is global. Through the University's research, scholarship and service and through its 120,000 alumni lots of good is done throughout the world. It's heartening when you think about it, to imagine your efforts multiplied so extravagantly by others from the same institution.

I like to think Notre Dame Magazine plays a role in this vast endeavor. We keep you close to a place that many see as instrumental to the formation of their values and ideals. We try to keep you informed about some of the most important, most challenging issues of the day. We provide a forum for people to express their thoughts and feelings about those experiences that touch them most deeply, where we find common ground in our shared humanity. We tell stories about Notre Dame people doing good things, stories that not only entertain and edify but also encourage and perhaps inspire. And we try to spice this mix with a few surprises, a lighter touch that traces a smile on life's serious face.

We hope Notre Dame Magazine makes a difference in your life, your family, your world. We also hope it offers a respite and a lift on those occasions when the world is a little wearying. But we, too, need your help.

Autumn posterAgain this year, we ask for your financial support. Even though ND alumni will continue to receive the magazine free, we suggest a gift of $25. We will send you "Autumn, Once in a Lifetime," the first in our poster series of the four seasons, for any gift of $35 or more. Your donation to the magazine is applied to the annual contribution necessary for the football ticket lottery.

Donations are tax-deductible, and your gifts may be safely charged to a credit card through a secure link on our web site here or by calling us at 574-631-5335.

Gratefully yours,
