A poem from
Puerta del Sol
by Francisco Aragon '03MFA

<Page 1 of 1>

TERTULIA

The unmarried Supreme

Court Judge and his

favorite cousin

would meet us there. Whoever

arrived first secured

a table and chairs--

the swirling black

marble, the red plush

and waiters in white criss-

crossing in the mirrors:

Café Gijon the space

for after-lunch coffee

and chat where names

of authors, films,

and politicians were passed

around in light-

hearted or at times heated

exchange, the verbal sparring

a manner of play

that would begin about

four, stretching to half

past six, whether you

could or couldn't make it

on any given

Saturday . . . Think

for a moment

of something you love to do

and rarely do anymore. That

is how I often feel

whenever I'm away.

TERTULIA

Al magistrado soltero

del Tribunal Supremo

y su primo preferido

les veíamos allí. El que

llegaba primero

cogía mesa y silas--

el mármol negro con

remolinos, la felpa roja,

y camareros de blanco entre-

cruzándose en los espejos:

el Gijón era el sitio

del café de sobremesa

y charla donde nombres

de autores, películas

y políticos se compartían,

el intercambio alegre

volviéndose a veces

disputa--ligera lucha verbal

una forma de juego

que duraba de

las cuatro hasta pasadas

las seis, lo mismo si uno

podía, o no, acudir

cualquier tarde

del sábado . . . Piens

un momento, en algo

que te encanta hacer

y apenas haces ya. Así

a menudo, es cómo me siento

cuando estoy fuera.
