José B. Alvarez IV, Director of Latin American and Caribbean Studies, SIT Study Abroad

José Alvarez earned a Ph.D. in Latin American Culture and Literature from Arizona State University. Dr. Alvarez has been with SIT since September, 2007. Dr. Alvarez’ scholarly specialization is in contemporary Latin American literature, film, performance, and cultural studies. He has a particular interest in Cuban narrative and film of the Revolution, cultural theory and gender studies and has published in, among other journals, Antipodas, Chasqui, Confluencia, Global Development Studies, Mester, Romance Languages Annual and Torre de papel. In 2002, Dr. Alvarez published his first book Contestatory Cuban Short Story of the Revolution, and is currently working on a book that analyzes three cultural milestones during the first five years of the revolution. He has contributed to numerous encyclopedias and has published many scholarly film and literary reviews. From 1997- 2008 he served as Associate Editor of Chasqui: revista de literatura latinoamericana. Dr. Alvarez was a tenured professor of literature and film at the University of Georgia and created and directed study abroad and internship programs in Spain, Venezuela, Cuba, and Peru in collaboration with the Franklin College of Art and Science and the Terry College of Business. Dr. Alvarez joined SIT Study Abroad in September 2007.
