OUR PURPOSE

MISSION STATEMENT

writing hands photoOur mission is twofold:

  • To foster present and future Catholic scholars and scholars of Catholicism
  • To support them in preserving and advancing Catholic learning and higher education

The Erasmus Institute is an international center at Notre Dame that helps scholars who are cultivating Catholic intellectual and cultural traditions, as well as those who will become such scholars.  Offering a variety of fellowships, seminars, lectures, and conferences, the Institute invites participants without regard to their religious belief.

In order to qualify for support, fellowship and other proposals must involve original research on a specific problem in the humanities, social sciences, or arts (broadly defined to include professional fields such as law and management) drawing on Catholic intellectual traditions. Alternatively, applicants must establish how support from the Erasmus Institute at Notre Dame will enhance their own ability to cultivate Catholic intellectual and cultural traditions.

Funding for the Erasmus Institute comes from the generosity of our donors, the William J. Carey Endowment, and the University of Notre Dame.
