Seventy percent of the funding came from the federal government, for research, facilities and equipment, and educational and service programs. Research expenditures, both internally and externally funded, have tripled in recent years, from $30.4 million in 1999 to more than $89.5 million in 2009. Awards from industry also have continued to grow, from an average of less than $2 million per year over the last five years to nearly $5 million in 2009.
